Why V4V?

Veterans need support more than ever. Suicide among veterans is a tragic and ongoing issue. According to a recent report by the Department of Veterans Affairs, an average of 17.6 veterans die by suicide every day, translating to approximately 6,400 veteran suicides per year, a number higher than deaths in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan combined.

Veterans face significant challenges transitioning to civilian life, which can lead to social isolation, financial difficulties, and mental health issues. The stigma surrounding mental health in the military often prevents veterans from seeking help.

The VA system is often criticized for long wait times and inadequate resources. Many veterans have complex medical needs that require specialized care, such as ongoing therapy and medication management for traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress disorder. To address these issues, it is crucial to improve access to mental health services, enhance the VA healthcare system, increase funding for mental health services, and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health in the military.

Providing targeted support such as employment assistance, counseling, and social support programs is essential to prevent suicides and ensure veterans receive the care and support they need. Community involvement is needed to help veterans overcome these hurdles and become better health advocates for their own health.

VETERAN SUICIDE STATISTICS

Veteran suicide is a tragic and ongoing issue.

According to a 2019 report by the Department of Veterans Affairs, an average of 17.2 veterans die by suicide every day. This translates to approximately 6,300 veteran suicides per year, which is higher than the number of deaths in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. Veterans with disabilities have a higher risk of suicide, with those rated as 70% or more disabled being at the greatest risk.

There are several reasons why more needs to be done to help veterans:

1

Many veterans face challenges in transitioning to civilian life, which can lead to social isolation, financial difficulties, and mental health issues.

2

The stigma surrounding mental health in the military can prevent veterans from seeking help.

3

The VA healthcare system, responsible for providing care to veterans, has been criticized for long wait times and inadequate resources.

Furthermore, many veterans have complex medical needs that require specialized care. For example, veterans with traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may require ongoing therapy and medication management. Without adequate support, these veterans may struggle to manage their conditions and may be at higher risk of suicide.

In order to address this issue, it is important to:

Improve the VA healthcare system.

Increase the funding for mental health services.

Increase access to mental health services for veterans with disabilities.

Reduce the stigma surrounding mental health in the military.

It is also important to provide targeted support to veterans with disabilities, such as employment assistance, financial counseling, and social support programs.

By taking these steps, we can help prevent veteran suicide and ensure that our veterans receive the care and support they need.
